I’ve just booked to show  at my first big art fair next year, Surrey Contemporary Art Fair. It’s exciting as it will give me the chance to paint a cohesive set of paintings with an end goal, though as usual I’m nervous about whether anyone will want to buy anything!

I’ll be sharing a stand with landscape and seascape painter Amanda Bates, who has shown at lots of fairs and galleries before and who I am very happy to be able to learn from.

About Amanda Bates

Prussia Cove Cliffs - Amanda Bates

Prussia Cove Cliffs – by Amanda Bates

Amanda is an intelligent, energetic, unique and prolific painter who spends a great deal of her time drawing and painting from life.
Here’s her bio:

“Amanda spent her childhood rescuing dragons from princes and her early adult life attempting to understand uncertainty. She is now an artist.
Working predominately in landscape, Amanda paints in oil with a knife. Her work is finely observed and rendered with a distinctive blend of clarity, energy and deconstructed colour.”

Visit Amanda Bates’ website and read her blog to find out more about what she does.

My work for the show

Olivia - by Kristin Rawcliffe

Olivia – by Kristin Rawcliffe

We should have all the genres covered between us as I’ll be showing still lifes and portraits.

I wasn’t sure whether to paint vibrant acrylics or alla prima  oils but I’ve decided to paint with oils as I feel I’m on a roll with them at the moment and am thoroughly enjoying both portraits and still lifes.

I’ll be on the lookout for interesting objects to paint for the still lifes (or as Amanda calls them ‘object portraits’) between now and then, so any good ideas, let me know!

I’m very excited but slightly nervous to be showing at such a big event, but will be great to see all the other art on show and meet the other artists.
